Directing Your Movie: A Two-Day Intensive UCLA Seminar with Myrl Screibman
Los Angeles, CA -- November 1-2, 2008
"Myrl Schreibman is awesome. It's like he compressed a year's worth of film school into a two-day experience."
In this two-day intensive seminar, learn how a movie or television director thinks, how they impact their audience, how they tell a story not in the broad strokes but in the minutia, and how they guide the creative ship. Directing is not only about camera placement, coverage, and the production process - it's about good planning, collaboration, trust, delivery, and the relationship of time to creativity. Through discussion, screenings, and demonstrations, we will explore:
• How directors approach the material.
• Pre-visualization and its importance for a successful director.
• Working with actors and casting directors.
• Directing of the camera: the basic syntax of the movie director.
• Camera coverage and the story: how a director's choice of shot affects an audience in how they see or feel at any moment.
• Practical on-set directing: how the director maintains control and creativity while working in a highly technical and often chaotic environment.
Myrl Schreibman is an award-winning director and producer who holds both a BA and an MFA from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. He is the author of the books "The Film Director Prepares" and "The Indie Producer's Handbook: Creative Producing From A to Z." Myrl's previous students include Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious 2), Patricia Cardoso (Real Women Have Curves), and Chris Chomyn (Bubba Ho-tep).
