Generic Appliable Attributes

Postby Ivywoodstudios » Mon Jun 04, 2012 10:59 am

So quite often when im using frameforge i will create a cube as a proxy stand in model for something not in frameforge.

what would be cool, is if i could assign an attribute to that new object that would give it automatic properties.

an example would be when i wanted to create a single shelf on a wall, so i made a cube, made the shelf, aligned it. etc.

then i wanted to add some junk on top of it. however, now it doesnt act like a shelf/table. so things dont automatically go ontop of it like they would a table etc. would be great if i could say this is a 'surface' or 'table' or etc. and have generic, automatic properties assigned to it.

You didn't explicitly say so, but I assume that part of setting up your shelf was elevating it into the air. When an object is elevated, it no longer participates in collision detection, so things fall through it. If you want to put something on it, then the most obvious solution would be to elevate that other object too (at exactly the appropriate elevation).

Here's a less obvious approach. Start with a "texturable cube" building block. Take it into the Green Room. Under the "part options" tab, set the front, left, right, and bottom surfaces to "not present". Then go to the "colors, textures, & state" tab and select the "back" part. Set its opacity all the way to the left (completely transparent), and also set its shininess all the way to the left. When you leave the Green Room, you will have a rectangular surface that appears to be floating in the air, yet it is not elevated so you can put things on it.
