Stereo in "The Christmas Carol"

Stereo in "The Christmas Carol"

Postby Innoventive Software, LLC » Sat Dec 12, 2009 12:58 am

First off, let me say that the movie has the most amazing animated performances I've ever seen. Jim Carrey's Scrooge is just AMAZING...

That said, I found the Stereo 3D a bit overdone in places and I really did NOT like his use of depth of field. I found it hurt to have things that I could not focus on, so I must say this movie firmly pushed me into the "NO DOF IN STEREO 3D MOVIES" camp.

Has anyone seen any movies in Stereo 3D that used DOF effectively?

I agree that the DOF was used more effectively in Avatar than in A Christmas Carol but I actually think the 3D in Avatar was actually rather mediocre compared to the film as a whole and I'm not sure the DOF served the 3D shots rather than simply being relatively innocuous...

Avatar used a narrow depth budget in order to edit fast.

The animations were signed off first in 2D, then the 3D was added.

Having said that, I think the handwork on Avatar was the best thing we have seen in 3D yet, and because of it, the "no shallow focus" camp will first have to produce something which comes withing at least a couple of lighyears of the quality on Pandora.

Best,

Simon
