Installing downloaded User Defined Objects - June 14th 2004

Postby Innoventive Software, LLC » Fri Jul 25, 2003 11:04 pm

NOTE: The following instructions REQUIRE that you are running at least FrameForge 3D Studio Version 1.1 or better. If you have any questions about whether your version meets this requirement, then you can always update to the latest version by running the WebGrab Internet Updater.

To install a User Object do the following:

1. If FrameForge 3D Studio is running, exit it.

2. Log-in to the forum if you haven't already, as only registered, logged-in users can download files.

3. Display the forum message containing the user object which you wish to download.

4. Click the image of paperclip in the message.

Your browser will then ask you where to save the file. Some browsers try to be helpful and will first offer to open it or have you assign a Helper Application. Just choose SAVE TO DISK or the available equivalent. If it suggests a file type of Compressed (Zipped) Folder then CHANGE the file type to All Files to prevent it from trying to be "smart" and adding the extension .zip.

If you are running Windows, you should select the FrameForge 3D Studio\library\User Objects folder

If you are on the Macintosh then select FrameForge 3D Studio Support:Object Library:User Objects.

4. Run Frameforge 3D Studio and the newly installed User Objects will automatically be displayed in your Object Library.

NOTE TO DEMO USERS -- not all User Objects will function with the demo as they may require building blocks or other objects which do not ship with the demo!

Scalability of objects

Postby vitalforces » Thu Jul 31, 2003 12:13 pm

One question: If I create something small, say, a handgun, can it be any size, for the users to scale down? It's easier to create a big gun for a clumsy guy like me.

Sure. You can also build it big yourself, then scale it down before you save it as a user defined.

When you selected Save As, you had a chance to specify any location, not just the desktop. The instructions above say where it is supposed to be.

Missing object

Postby philbrow » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:20 pm

I created an wrl using Art of Illusion etc and added textures with FF2, saved as a virtual object then uploaded.
When people try to download this generates a "Missing a needed object" error message. It asks to locate the object, or temporarily subsitute. The missing object is obviously the one imported from wrl.
So what should I do, upload this as a separate file and tell users to download both?

If you saved the object as an Object state then it would need the original file, But if you save it as "True FrameForge Object" then it should work as long as you export the True FF object and not the original file.

i hope that makes sense.

The problem is that the virtual object you created contains a REFERENCE to imported VRML object but does not, itself, contain that object. What you should do is, open the virtual object on your machine, then export it as a true FrameForge 3D Studio object and share that.

If you're on the Mac then its under FrameForge 3D Studio Support->Object Library->User Objects

If you're under Vista then you need to launch FrameForge 3D Studio and go to TOOLS->MANAGE SUPPORT FOLDERS and then select your Object Library Menu.
