Rule of Thirds Grid

Postby Cedric Akins » Sat Apr 05, 2008 10:39 pm

I am currently working on two story boards and was wondering about something. It would be a great idea to include a simple grid you could turn on and off that shows a "rule of thirds" type of diagram.

What do you guys think? Vote please? :?:

Are you talking about something in the camera view (like a TV Safe framing guide) or am I missing what you're asking about. Can you post a sample image showing what you're requesting?

The grid for the rule of thirds is like a Tic, Tac, Toe grid that is placed across the entire frame of the camera. It does not cahnge size at any time, reguardless to what is placed in the view of the camera. This is a tool that helps to assist with framing.

The previous pictures were edited in photoshop. As you can see the framing is somewhat off. With the tic, tac, toe grid inside of the program the director/storyboard artist could move the characters to the ideal place inside the frame without guessing.

This is just a thought.

I was just about to post a similar suggestion when I found this post. I think it's a great idea, but I see this post was back in 2008, and as far as I can tell it hasn't been implemented, yeah?

In the Pro or Greater version, this could be done very easily using the Ground Glass Function. The Ground Glass Function can be found under FILE -> SELECT GROUND GLASS -> GROUND GLASS MANAGER and you just create a new one and position the unfilled rectangles as desired.

NOTE: If you are running the CORE version then you do NOT have this capability. To upgrade to the pro or stereo version, click here.

How do you make this grid accurately?

If you look at the top of the dialog (as shown above) it will show you the dimensions in millimeters, you can just do the division and enter it numerically.
